Poroshenko participates in launch of Karachun radio and television tower

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has taken part in the launch of the radio and television tower atop Karachun mountain near Sloviansk in Donetsk region.

During the ceremony Ukraine's head of state familiarized himself with the equipment installed at the tower and inspected the adjoining radio and television complex.

"This is very important in light of the fact that a hybrid war is being waged against Ukraine. After transmissions start, we can talk about expanding coverage range tenfold," the head of state said.

Poroshenko spoke live on Army FM radio, telling Ukrainian soldiers who are fulfilling their military tasks on the frontlines in the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) zone and congratulated them with the upcoming Armed Services Day holiday.

"We are also analyzing the possibility of strengthening our transmitters. They are now at the same altitude as when the tower was felled. Karachun is place of legends," Poroshenko said.

On July 5 Poroshenko ordered the radio and television tower to be completed within two months.

At the end of July the non-governmental organization Information Maidan appealed in writing to Poroshenko, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, Information Policy Minister Yuriy Stets and Donetsk Regional Administration Head Pavlo Zhebrivsky asking them to fight attempts to sabotage the project. The activists in the letter asked the officials to intervene and task Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers to ensure the erection of a 250-meter high tower enabling television broadcasting to occupied areas in eastern Ukraine, as well as to bring the saboteurs to justice.

On October 12, Stets announced resumption of work and threatened workers with dismissal if they violated deadlines for finishing completion of the new tower.

On November 10, Ukraine's Deputy Information Policy Ministry Artem Bidenko said construction of the radio and television tower on Karachun mountain in Donetsk region was complete and would be operation in about two weeks.

Stets, in turn, said the individuals responsible for delays in the project received reprimands or were fired.
