G7 ambassadors warn Poroshenko against weakening e-declaration system

The ambassadors of G7 countries have warned Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko about the dangers of certain legislative initiatives, which can negate Ukraine's efforts in combating corruption, in particular weaken the electronic declaration system, the European Truth online publication reported.

According to the publication, the corresponding letter by the ambassadors of G7 and Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli was sent to the president of Ukraine on October 25.

In this letter, the ambassadors praise Ukraine's achievements in the fight against corruption, in particular they note the importance of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the launch of an electronic declaration system.

At the same time, the ambassadors highlighted several legislative initiatives in recent weeks that threaten the important anti-corruption element – the e-declaration system and the ongoing reforms, the European Truth said.

In particular, some of the bills, if passed, can weaken the e-declaration system and restrict the powers of the NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office in investigation and management of high-profile corruption cases.

Also, the ambassadors expressed their concern about technical failures in the e-declaration system and called to make all the necessary steps to fix them.

In addition, the G7 ambassadors said that complete independence of anti-corruption institutions from political interference is of paramount importance.
