Poroshenko: Normandy Four leaders agree on deployment of armed OSCE mission in Donbas

Normandy Four leaders have agreed in Berlin that an armed police mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will be deployed in Donbas, eastern Ukraine, to ensure preparations for local elections there, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said.

"Agreement has been reached that there will be no interference in the OSCE's activity. And to facilitate preparations for local elections in future, when security conditions let us hold those elections, we'll now make an attempt to deploy an armed – or as we call it – police mission of the OSCE, which will ensure security amid both the voting process and the transition period," he said at a press conference after a meeting of the leaders of Ukraine, Germany, France, Russia in Berlin in the early hours of Thursday.

The Ukrainian president confirmed the Russian side had agreed with the need to send the OSCE's armed police force to Donbas.

"I can particularly stress that the Russian side has also supported the necessity to deploy an armed police mission of the OSCE," Poroshenko said.
