Court orders arrest of two former employees of Crimea prosecutor's office

Kyiv's Pechersky District Court has issued an order to arrest two former employees of the prosecutor's office in Ukraine's Autonomous Republic of Crimea, posting bail at UAH 826,000,600 for each. .

The press service of the Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine (PGO) said the decision was taken on July 21 based on testimony from agents from the special PGO office investigating economic crimes.

"The individuals are suspected of seeking illegal gains from a former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine," the statement says.

As earlier reported, on July 15, 2016 employees of Ukraine's State Security Agency (SBU) together with PGO agents detained in Kyiv and Bakhmut (Donetsk region) two prosecutors who demanded money from former Crimean deputy Vasyl Hanysh. The prosecutors handling the case demanded $45,000 for lightening the charges against the former deputy. After haggling, the bribe was reduced to $15,000.

The PGO on March 15 filed treason cases against 76 former deputies of the Crimean parliament. One suspect, Hanysh, was detained on April 28 leaving Crimea. On April 29, Kyiv's Pechersky District Court ordered his arrest.

At the start of August the PGO investigation of Hanysh was completed and sent to the Kyiv City Court of Appeals to determine pretrial confinement. Kyiv's Dniprovsky District Court remanded Hanysh to house arrest On January 14, 2016 because of his poor health.
