The president of Ukraine and the Verkhovna Rada should actively support the newly appointed Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko in his fight against corruption, the deputy chairperson of the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) (CDU/CSU) of the German Bundestag Franz Jung said.

"The parliamentary faction of the CDU/CSU welcomes that Ukraine has a new prosecutor general - Yuriy Lutsenko. Now he faces the challenge of stepping up actions in the rigid structures of the Prosecutor General's Office and the judicial system of Ukraine, as well as fight with a high level of corruption in these areas. Only a radical solution of this issue can result in political, social and economic modernization of Ukraine," Jung said in his statement for the press.

The deputy chairperson of the CDU/CSU said that the fight against corruption and the increased use of the rule of law would call upon Lutsenko to be brave and determined. "In that regard, it is not so important that the new prosecutor general is not a man of law. More important is the fact that he is well aware from his past experience in the government how corruption should be overcome in Ukraine, and he will find strong followers to achieve that," the statement reads.
