PGO closes case against two former Naftogaz officials, the Katsuba brothers

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has closed resonant criminal proceedings against the former environment of ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, MP Serhiy Leschenko (Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction) has said.

"After the Revolution of Dignity criminal proceedings were instituted regarding UAH 500 million, which Naftogaz Ukrainy paid to Kurchenko [Serhiy Kurchenko is the head of the supervisory board and the owner of VETEK. Kurchenko is on the international wanted list]. The Katsuba brothers were put under investigation in a year after the probe began. Nevertheless, the suspicions we raised were ignored and the case was closed in three months. This is another example of how the PGO "ruins" resonant cases against officials from disgraced former President Yanukovych's entourage," Leschenko said at a briefing in Kyiv.

The MP said "supervision over this criminal investigation was carried out by the department headed by First Deputy Prosecutor General Mr. Sevruk [Yuri Sevruk], the man who is now acting Prosecutor General of Ukraine and among those mentioned as a candidate to head the PGO.

"This is another example of how political conspiracy and political expedienc trump the rule of law Ukraine. We must change the leadership of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine," Leschenko added.
