Poroshenko: We'll defend legal interests of Crimean Tatars, all Ukrainians in Crimea

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said he expects the full support of his country's international partners in refusing to recognize Russia's occupation of Crimea.

"Crimea is a territory of Ukraine. We'll defend the legal interests of Crimean Tatar People and all Ukrainians who live in the occupied territory and we hope our international partners in future will continue the policy of not recognizing Russia's occupation of Crimea," Poroshenko said at a meeting with Belgium Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, Foreign Minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn, and Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders.

According to Poroshenko, he submitted a letter on November 4 to the Cabinet of Ministers on immediately establishing a working group to terminate freight transport and trade turnover with Crimea, as well as to work on the elaboration of a respective draft decision.

Poroshenko offered to temporarily terminate road and railroad freight transport communication with Crimea in both directions before the adoption of the respective decision.

He also expressed his confidence that the issue of energy supply to the peninsula could be solved by the working group, while also giving thanks for the position of the EU for refusing to recognize the annexation of Crimea by Russia and prolongation of sanctions, given the situation on the peninsula.

"We are really concerned over the situation in Crimea. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, including Crimean Tatars, are facing brutal pressure from the Russian authorities right now," the president said.

Poroshenko said Ukraine needs to coordinate with its international partners to secure the liberation of arrested activists, restore the broadcasting of Crimean media, and allow Crimean Tatar leaders to return to their homes.

"We are not satisfied with today's status quo when the occupational authorities neglect the basic rights of Crimea Tatars. These irresponsible actions caused significant escalation between the activists and occupational authorities," he said.
