Ukrainian mission to JCCC tells OSCE SMM tensions tend to escalate along Donbas contact line

Maj. Gen. Borys Kremenetsky, head of the Ukrainian mission to the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC) overseeing the ceasefire and stabilization along the contact line in Donbas, has informed OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) members about tensions that persisted along the contact line on November 14 and 15, 2015, and the ongoing deterioration trend.

The Ukrainian mission to the JCCC said in a report posted on the Ukrainian Defense Ministry website on Tuesday that the Ukrainian JCCC monitors observed 89 violations of the ceasefire over the weekend, including six attacks on Ukrainian army positions.

"Despite the statements made by heads of individual districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and their sponsors regarding the pullback of mortars, the Ukrainian mission to the JCCC observed 11 cases of use of illegal weapons, such as six cases of use of 120mm mortars and five of use of 82mm mortars in the Donetsk airport and Shyrokyne areas. JCCC shift officers tried to stop 19 shelling incidents on November 14 and 15 and succeeded in 14 cases," press officer of the Ukrainian mission to the JCCC Serhiy Berets said.

Provocative shelling incidents "confirm that the illegal armed units are intentionally escalating the conflict," he said.
