Signal flare sparks fire at Ukrainian ammo depot – Defense Ministry

The Ukrainian security service in Luhansk region has opened a criminal case on terror attack counts under Part 3 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine with regard to the fire that broke out at the Ukrainian Armed Forces combined field depot near the town of Svatove, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry press service said.

A commission comprising senior officials of the Defense Ministry and the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff has established that the fire was started at about 19:45 local time on October 29 by a signal flare that landed in the territory of the depot, the press service said.

Firefighting tanks are being used to deal with the incident, and a helicopter has flown over the site to help assess the conditions and plan the emergency situation cleanup. Engineering unit servicemen are on a reconnaissance mission, the ministry reported.

The intensity of explosions has declined but sporadic detonations continue, it said.

According to an updated report, the fire and ammo detonations have hurt four servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A woman was killed and another civilian was injured.

The final extent of the damage will be established by an internal investigation.

A detective of the investigative department of the Ukrainian security service in Luhansk region has entered a criminal case opened on terror attack counts into the unified register of prejudicial inquiries.
