Former authorities must be brought to trial for their crimes - Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that the investigation of crimes committed by the former authorities is a top priority task which society has presented to the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine.

"Together with society I demand that the former authorities should be brought to trial. We gave them the opportunity to bear responsibility via trial in absentia, even if they have fled. It is my clear task before the law enforcement and judicial systems," he said in an interview on Ukrainian TV channels on Sunday.

"I'm not going to defend a single law enforcement agency that had to ensure an unbiased investigation into the murders in Maidan [winter 2013-2014] and into the responsibility of the former authorities," he said.

Poroshenko said that former members of the authorities have been trying to disguise themselves by taking evidence with them, and destroying weapons and orders.

"But this mustn't stop us from bringing them to account," he said.

The president believes the investigation should eventually be taken from the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office. "The parliament should fulfill its obligation and create a state investigation bureau, which will be independent, including of politicians, which should ensure a thorough, impartial investigation," he said.

Responding to a question as to whether the current judges can be objective, the president said he would not like to put labels on everyone. He said those representatives of the judicial administration who are true patriots should be given an opportunity to show that they are resolute and corruption free, and that they are "not afraid." "These are two components of a true court," Poroshenko said.

"A fair trial is needed here and now," Poroshenko said.

The president called the proposals to drive away all current judges and invite foreigners to help reform courts as "unacceptable" and "radical."

"We, Ukrainians, should eventually learn to bear personal responsibility for our own state," Poroshenko said. However, he did not rule out the possibility of inviting some specialists from abroad.
