Second grenade in Rada clashes on Aug 31 meant to hit parliament's window – Poroshenko

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said that the first grenade thrown outside Verkhovna Rada on August 31 was aimed at National Guard servicemen and that a second grenade was aimed at a window.

"The first grenade to be thrown was meant to provoke National guardsmen into firing in response, the second grenade was meant for a window of Verkhovna Rada," he said during an extended sitting of the Cabinet of Ministers in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"Now I can describe the plan the terrorists had: to conceal those responsible with smoke to hide them from video surveillance [cameras], so the identities of those criminals planning to kill people and perform this provocation couldn't be identified," Poroshenko said.

He said that National Guard servicemen "kicked back the smoke grenades to stop the smoke from concealing the criminals."

"Not [fragmentary] grenades, but smoke grenades were kicked back, so the criminal investigation can be conducted later," Poroshenko said.

"It was a special grenade, not a RGD-5, which explodes 5-6 seconds after it falls on the ground, but an RGO hand grenade, which explodes after contact with any surface, including the glass of the windows of the Verkhovna Rada, where many MPs and journalists stood. The grenade could explode into 700 fragments – imagine the number of victims at the Verkhovna Rada, including those who now take it upon themselves to criticize the National Guard servicemen," Poroshenko said.

The actions of the president, law enforcement agencies including the National Guard, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and wider society are focused on one thing – condemnation of the actions of the terrorists, Poroshenko said.

"All [of society] vigorously condemns [the actions of] the terrorists and demands punishment for the guilty. There are always fresh flowers at the place, on Constitution Square, where the Ukrainian servicemen were killed. Dear officials, we must appreciate such people's reaction," Poroshenko said.
