Ukraine to begin recruiting police special forces in November

The first recruitment campaign in the Ukrainian KORD police special force (counterpart of the U.S. SWAT special force) will be announced in November, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

"I believe that we will announce the first KORD training and their first recruitment in November," Avakov told a press briefing in Kharkiv on Friday.

He said that American instructors who will train coaches for KORD will come to Ukraine on September 30.

"[American] instructors will arrive on September 30 to train together with our instructor-coaches for the whole KORD force. This is such a sophisticated structure. Because KORD is a very professional police [unit], this is a high-class special force," Avakov said.

KORD is expected to have three parts, he said.

"Most probably, it [KORD] in Ukraine will be divided into three parts - the first part will deal with pubic security, the second part will take special assault actions in special situations, when the police call them, and the third one are commandos in the special forces who can do all. There are six parts in the United States," Avakov said.

He also said that contrary to patrol police the KORD commandos will be trained at a training center in Kyiv.
