Poroshenko urges punishment for perpetrators, organizers of riots outside Rada

The organizers of the clashes that occurred outside the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada on Monday, including politicians, must be held strictly to account, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said.

"It was an anti-Ukrainian protest, for which all of its organizers without exception, all representatives of political forces must be held strictly liable," Poroshenko said in a televised address on Monday.

The events that occurred outside the Verkhovna Rada after its vote were "a stab in the back," he said.

Poroshenko said he will personally make sure both the perpetrators and organizers are held to justice.

"Today I had a meeting with security officials, where clear tasks were issued with regard to the transparency of the investigation and bringing not only the perpetrators but also the organizers, including political ones, to account," the president said.

The head of state expressed his regret that some of the coalition deputies "attacked the president" and launched a campaign against Ukraine's closest allies - the United States, Germany, France, the European Union - instead of directing their energy on fighting the external enemy.

"I am by no means asserting that they are Moscow's agents. Instead of taking a responsible position some assumed a posture, one that is beautiful but cynical and dangerous for the country. Some acted not as statesmen but as egoistic politicos who cannot see beyond October 25 when local elections are (due)," Poroshenko stressed.
