Military prosecutors: 366 Ukrainian troops were killed in Ilovaisk encirclement

A total of 366 Ukrainian troops and law enforcement officers were killed and 429 were wounded in the events that occurred near Ilovaisk, Donetsk region, in August 2014, Ukraine's Main Military Prosecutor Anatoliy Matios said, citing the results of a comprehensive evaluation.

"The casualties of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, National Guard and Interior Ministry are 366 dead and 429 wounded. A total of 128 people were captured and 158 are listed as missing," Matios said while presenting the results of an evaluation of the events associated with the military operation near Ilovaysk in Kyiv on Friday.

He also said Ukraine's financial losses caused by the operation near Ilovaysk are estimated at UAH 298.29 million.

According to earlier reports, militia encircled volunteer battalions and units of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry and Armed Forces near Ilovaisk in late August 2014, which led to considerable casualties and the capture of Ukrainian troops.

Ukraine's Main Military prosecutor Anatoliy Matios said, citing the results of a comprehensive evaluation, that only 1,050 troops were involved in the Ilovaisk fighting.

"The number of people, military men and citizens of Ukraine who participated in this conflict and this tragedy, has been clearly determined by investigators. It's 1,050 people," Matios told a briefing on Friday.

In early August, Matios said that the main ideologist of unleashing the armed conflict within Ukrainian territory was Head of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) placed Gerasimov and ten other servicemen of the Russian Army on the wanted list for the organization, preparation and initiating of the armed conflict as their whereabouts in Ukraine during the Ilovaisk events has been definitely established.
