Kremlin: Kyiv's idea to submit to UN General Assembly issue on tribunal on Malaysian Boeing is prospectless

Russian presidential press officer Dmitry Peskov has called the statements by Kyiv on the possible submission to the UN General Assembly of the issue of the creation of an international tribunal for the investigation into the Malaysian Boeing crash as prospectless.

"I would not want to engage in any hypothetical reasoning now," Peskov told reporters on Friday, responding to a request to comment on the statements by Andriy Parubiy, first deputy speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, saying that the issue of the creation of an international tribunal may be submitted to the UN General Assembly.

Peskov said "the reasoning about the General Assembly and various formats is nothing else than a distraction of attention away from the need to continue the real investigation [into the Malaysian Boeing crash]."

"In this case, it is absolutely inappropriate, and most importantly, prospectless," he said.

On July 29, Russia used its right to veto the UN Security Council resolution on the foundation of an international tribunal for the investigation into the Malaysian Boeing crash.

Commenting in this regard on the statements made by the Kyiv authorities on the intention to re-submit a resolution on the creation of an international tribunal in the UN Security Council, Peskov said one should now focus on an objective evaluation of the Malaysian Boeing crash in eastern Ukraine, not reason about the possible resubmission of such a resolution.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin earlier said a new attempt to get the Security Council to create an international tribunal to bring those responsible for the crash to justice may be made after two months following the completion of the investigation into the Boeing crash.

"Let's proceed from the present, and we believe the main thing now is to focus on an impartial and objective investigation," Peskov said.
