Ukrainian, Australian leaders agree to coordinate actions to establish international tribunal on MH17 disaster

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has had a telephone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, during which they discussed the establishment of an international tribunal to bring to justice those responsible for the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 disaster in Donetsk region in the summer of 2014.

"The president of Ukraine and the prime minister of Australia have discussed in detail the implementation of a joint initiative of Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine concerning the establishment of an international tribunal to bring to justice those responsible for the downing of the plane. The two officials agreed to closely coordinate actions in this important initiative including at the level of foreign ministers," reads a statement posted on the website of the Ukrainian president on Monday.

The leaders of Ukraine and Australia noted that by solving the question of the establishment of the international criminal tribunal the international community should exhibit its readiness to give an appropriate response to threats to the security of civil aviation and to world peace and stability as a whole.

The interlocutors exchanged opinions on de-escalation of the situation in Donbas and discussed further assistance to Ukraine on the part of Australia.
