Chisinau urges Kyiv to accord decisions on Transdniestrian border section

Ukraine's enhancement of control at the Transdniestrian section of the border with Moldova should not impede trade and citizens' travel, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Victor Osipov said.

"We would like it very much if the decisions [on the Transdniestrian border section] made by Ukraine were discussed with us," Osipov said in an interview with Kommersant newspaper published on Tuesday.

According to the deputy prime minister, this "[either] does not happen or does not happen at a sufficient level."

"Unfortunately, due to emotions running high in Ukraine and the Odesa region in particular, the measures taken are much tougher than usual border control," Osipov said.

The Moldovan deputy prime minister said he discussed this issue in Kyiv.

"I said that we do not want the decisions on control made by Ukraine to impede fair trade. Let it be fighting contraband, not honest trade. Obstacles for honest trade and law-abiding citizens should not be created. Even if these are citizens with Russian passports," Osipov said.

Checking information on whether a person has "bad intentions" is "the work of special services and this is one thing, but if a person – a normal, law-abiding citizen – goes around [on his/her] own business, then freedom of travel should not be impeded," he said.

Previously, "the Transdniestrian section of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border was very transparent, it was a total mess, with no control, plus there was corruption," Osipov said. However, "now control, which did not exist before, has appeared."
