Protesters in Yerevan center form hitherto unnamed movement

People protesting against a rise of electricity tariffs on Bagramian Avenue in downtown Yerevan have formed a new movement.

"We do not have a name so far. Yet the content is more important than the formalities. The primary task for now is the correct organization of civil movement," the movement's representative in charge of information issues, David Sanasarian, has told reporters.

He thanked activists of the movement No to Robbery for laying "groundwork for further struggle." Sanasarian also said that the demonstrators had formed field-specific committees.

"We do not rule out new demands. Hopefully, the movement will acquire a fresh impetus," he said. Sanasarian is a member of the opposition party Heritage, but he does not link his participation in the protest to party membership.

Members and coordinators of the civil movement No to Robbery left Bagramian Avenue for Freedom Square on Sunday, following appeals of the police. They said that people who decided to stay on Bagramian Avenue and refused to go were provoking tensions.

Movement coordinators said at a press conference on Tuesday that they intended to end "street struggle" and would continue their effort "on a legal basis."

Earlier people who gathered on Bagramian Avenue organized public debate on the situation around the rise of energy tariffs and formed committees.

The demonstrators have the same demands as members of the civil movement No to Robbery - to cancel the decision on rising electricity tariffs, to review and reduce the tariffs, and to hold liable police officers who used force against the protesters in the dispersal of the rally on June 23.
