Saakashvili demands dismissal of newly-appointed acting Odesa customs service head

Mikheil Saakashvili, the head of Odesa Regional Administration, will demand that the newly appointed acting chief of the Odesa customs service be dismissed.

"We mapped out the terms and conditions of a competition for the customs so as to find new people. And all of a sudden, unknown to me, an acting head [was appointed] on Wednesday, even though they say let Saakashvili be responsible for the receipts. It's a disaster. This man has nothing to do there, it's a usual member of another clan from Kyiv to regulate the flows. It can't be this way - he and I can't be there together," Saakashvili said in the Shuster Live TV program.

"I'll raise this issue with the chief of the [Customs] Service and the prime minister," he said.

Saakashvili vowed also that, after the Odesa customs service's personnel is reformed, "we will double customs receipts in six months and will triple them in a year or a year and a half."

"Here's my word for this," he added.

Saakashvili also promised to launch an electronic cargo clearance system in November.
