SBU chief to demand former deputy prosecutor general Danylenko be detained, questioned over oil depot fire

Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Chief Valentyn Nalyvaichenko has said that the former deputy prosecutor general Anatoliy Danylenko provided "protection" for the illegal activities of the BRSM-Nafta and will demand for Danylenko to be brought to the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) for questioning.

"The deputy prosecutor general, who in October covered up and actually contributed to the criminal activities, is a subject to these criminal proceedings. I want to give his name, this is a Ukrainian citizen, born 1963, his name is Danylenko," he told reporters at the main investigation directorate of the PGO in Kyiv on Monday.

Nalyvaichenko said: "We demand that the Prosecutor General's Office should detain this man, and we will not give over the proceedings... into this oil depot [criminal proceeding under "Ecocide" article of the Criminal Code of Ukraine]. We demand decisive actions, and tomorrow at this time I will be here again. I will come along with the Alpha special police to get permission for his the arrest and his delivery for questioning."

SBU spokesman Markiyan Lubkivsky had previously said that Nalyvaichenko would not travel to the U.S. to meet with U.S. congressmen on June 16 and 17 as planned as he had received summons from an investigator of the Ukrainian PGO.

"Instead he received a summons from an investigator of the Prosecutor General's Office in reaction to his statement at the latest meeting of the Cabinet about the involvement of the former leadership of the Prosecutor General's Office in the fire at the BRSM oil depot. Instead of providing explanations to U.S. congressmen, he will provide explanations to investigators of the Prosecutor General's Office," Lubkivskiy said.

Nalyvaichenko previously said that the former deputy prosecutor was a co-owner of the BRSM-Nafta oil depot.

A fire broke out at the BRSM-Nafta oil depot in the village of Kriachky outside Kyiv on June 8. Firefighters continue to water down the depot and cool the oil containers. There is no danger of the fire spreading further. Five people died in the fire and 15 were injured, ten of them were hospitalized.
