Over 6,000 people killed in one year of Donbas conflict, almost 15,500 wounded – UN

Within one year of the conflict in eastern Ukraine 6,116 people have been killed and 15,474 have been wounded, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has reported.

According to the UN News Center, OHCHR spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani announced this in Geneva. She said that since April 2014 at least 6,116 people, both military personnel and civilians, have been killed and 15,474 have been wounded.

She said that the actual number of casualties could be considerably higher, as hundreds remain missing and hundreds of bodies still need to be recovered.

Shamdasani also said she was alarmed about the worsening of the human rights situation in eastern Ukraine, which is connected to violations of the ceasefire.

"According to reports, fighting has intensified, especially in the vicinity of Donetsk airport and near the village of Shyrokyne in Donetsk region," she said, adding that the UN is worried about the escalation of military actions.

"Civilians continue to suffer seriously as a result of the protracted conflict. In 2015 alone, about 400 civilians have been killed as a result of indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and because of landmines and unexploded ordnance – both in Government-controlled territory and in territory controlled by armed groups [separatist militants]," Shamdasani said.
