Poroshenko enacts additional measures to enhance national security

President Petro Poroshenko has put in force the February 18 resolution of the National Security and Defense Council on additional measures to strengthen the national security of Ukraine, in the current "special period," the president's office said in a statement on Thursday.

One of the measures is setting up a 'Military Cabinet' to be the council's executive body.

Under the resolution, the main duties of the Military Cabinet include evaluating the armed forces' needs for personnel and armaments, deciding what logistic, energy, financial, information and other resources Ukraine needs, and finding out what military aid should be sought from foreign countries and international organizations.

The Military Cabinet must also oversee putting the economy on 'special period' lines, make decisions on complete or partial mobilization of reservists and demobilization of military personnel, and examine "proposals for the use of the personnel and logistic resources of structures in the security and defense sector for repelling an armed aggression against Ukraine."

The Military Cabinet is headed by the Ukrainian president. Its secretary is the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. The other Cabinet members are the prime minister, the ministers of the interior, foreign affairs and defense, the chiefs of the Security Service and State Border Guard Service, the chief of the armed forces general staff, the commander of the National Guard, the president's chief of staff, and, optionally, the chairman of parliament.
