Kyivans urged not to panic, stop bulk-buying groceries

The Kyiv city authorities are in talks with retailers over the prevention of unjustified price increase on staple foods, Kyiv City Council Secretary Oleksiy Reznikov has said.

"The Kyiv authorities are monitoring all prices on staple foods in the city and are in talks with retail chains' representatives," he said at a briefing on Tuesday.

They are also considering creating farmers' markets to enable Kyiv residents to buy directly from producers.

The authorities need to persuade the public not to yield to panic and stop buying groceries in bulk, the secretary said.

"Once again I want to appeal to citizens: please do not yield to the panic. We have a sufficient supply of sugar, salt and grains! We still have 300,000 tonnes of sugar from last year and another 2 million tonnes have been made this year. As for salt, there is enough of it too! Buckwheat yielded 167,000 tonnes," Reznikov said.
