Yatseniuk: Ukraine to build "security line" around Donbas, "European Rampart" on Russian border

The Ukrainian government will approve on Wednesday a new edition of the "European Rampart" program to be implemented on the border with Russia, and this rampart, the same as the security line along Donbas, will be erected and reinforced, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said.

"We have set tasks regarding the construction of the security line. This line is bordering the ATO zone and preventing Russian terrorists and mercenaries from breaking into territories which are controlled and will be controlled by the Ukrainian authorities," Yatseniuk said in his opening remarks at a government meeting on Wednesday.

The second "security line" to be built by Ukraine is "the European Rampart" along the Ukrainian-Russian state border, he said.

The government allotted UAH 235 million for the security line and the European Rampart in 2014, Yatseniuk said.

"Following consultations and a series of meetings dedicated to the lessening of costs of the European Rampart project and its higher effectiveness, we will approve a new edition of the European Rampart project today," he noted.

"The state border is being built, it will be built. If anyone has objections, we will offer them a chance to travel to the other side of the border," the prime minister said.

In the words of State Border Service head Viktor Nazarenko, they had optimized the European Rampart project and cut its costs at least twice.

"The preliminary cost of the works may be at least halved or reduced even more," Nazarenko said.
