Heads of Ukrainian and German parliaments condemn Crimea's annexation, demand Savchenko be set free – joint statement

The heads of the Ukrainian and German Parliaments have demanded that Ukrainian MP and member of Ukraine's delegation to PACE Nadia Savchenko be set free, and condemned the annexation of Crimea by Russia, according to their joint statement.

"Heads of Ukrainian and German parliaments demanded that Savchenko, the pilot who was taken captive at the end of June, MP of Ukrainian parliament and member of Ukraine's delegation to PACE, be set free" reads the joint statement of Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Hroisman and President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert, which was made on Monday.

According to the statement, the parliament heads condemn the illegal annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia, which contradicts the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act and the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances 1994. In this regard, the heads of the parliaments pointed out the importance of the resolution made by UN General Assembly dated March 27, 2014, which confirmed Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In turn, at a joint briefing with Hroisman, Lammert said that Savchenko's liberation would be a well timed and fitting symbol.

They also confirmed the unlimited sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and called upon all the parties of the Donbas conflict to fully implement the Minsk agreements. According to them, this will open up the way to a peaceful and political settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine.

"The Minsk agreements are a basis for achieving a lasting peace and stability in the region. Heads of parliaments welcome the intent of the leaders of Ukraine, Germany, Russia and France to use their influence to [see that] the set of measures adopted on February 12, 2015 is observed," reads the statement.

Savchenko, a 33-year-old pilot, was fighting with the Aidar volunteer battalion in eastern Ukraine when she was captured by militants in June near the town of Schastia, a suburb of Luhansk. It was stated on July 8 that she was being held at the Voronezh pre-trial detention facility in Russia.

On July 9, Russia indicted her for complicity in murder. Savchenko has rejected all charges. Ukraine is demanding her release.

On October 27, the Moscow Basmanny Court ruled to extend Savchenko's arrest until February 13, 2015. On February 10, the same court extended her arrest until May 13.

Savchenko went on a hunger strike in mid-December in response to the prison's failure to provide her with medical care.
