Kyiv "cautiously optimistic" about Feb 11 Normandy format summit in Minsk – Foreign Ministry

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said it is "cautiously optimistic" about an upcoming Normandy format summit, which is expected to take place in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, on February 11.

"We are approaching the negotiations in Minsk with cautious optimism. But we also need to prepare for the worse-case scenario," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis told the Channel 5 television station on Monday evening.

Moscow's latest statements "do not indicate any wish on the part of Russia to look for a compromise," he said.

Perebyinis also believes that the West's response is very serious and shows that its "patience is not limitless."

"The rhetoric demonstrated by [German Chancellor] Angela Merkel and [French President] Francois Hollande both last week and after today's meeting with [U.S. President] Barack Obama indicates that the meeting set for Wednesday is not the last chance, as they believe, to find a common denominator on a peaceful solution to this situation in Ukraine," the diplomat said.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Hollande, Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to hold a Normandy format meeting in Minsk on February 11.
