Kyiv seeks to bolster OSCE monitoring mission in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Hroisman and OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Ilkka Kanerva discussed the possibility of increasing the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) working in eastern Ukraine.

"It would be good to receive support from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly concerning the monitoring mission both on the territory of Ukraine and, in particular, the Russian side of the border in order to stop deliveries of weapons, militants, tanks and armaments targeting Ukrainian citizens, including those who live in these temporarily occupied territories," Hroisman said at a joint press briefing with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly president in Kyiv on Friday.

Kanerva, for his part, noted that given the 600-kilometer-long border between Russia and eastern Ukraine, the presence of OSCE monitors at only two border crossing points is not enough to analyze the actual situation in the area.

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is interested in the implementation of all points of the Minsk agreements, which, however, cannot be implemented if there are no relevant tools, he said.
