UN urges govt to find people responsible for indiscriminate fire in east Ukraine

An investigation of numerous instances of shelling of civilian quarters in eastern Ukraine and punishing those responsible must be a priority, says Ivan Simonovic, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights.

About 300 instances of shelling have been registered (since the beginning of 2014), and neither the armed groups, nor the government assumed responsibility for this indiscriminate fire, Simonovic told a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

To prevent a repeat of such cases in the future, Simonovic said it is important to conduct an inquiry, find those responsible and take legal action. He said he is firmly convinced that after an inquiry legal action should be a priority, the UN assistant said.
