Minsk agreements still capable of bringing peace to eastern Ukraine - prime minister

The Minsk agreements reached in September are still capable of helping resolving the armed conflict in the eastern part of Ukraine, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.

"The Minsk plan is a plan that can still bring peace to Ukraine and stop Russia's military aggression," Yatseniuk said at a government session on Wednesday.

In his opinion, it is necessary to start with the implementation of three major points, in particular, the restoration by the Ukrainian side of control over the border, the withdrawal of Russian troops and militants from Ukrainian territory, and a halt in arms supplies from Russia.

Yatseniuk said that Ukraine had done everything in its power to achieve peace in Donbas.

"Ukraine has done everything to achieve peace: the Minsk agreements were signed, a number of complex laws in parliament were adopted, a unilateral ceasefire was declared, and everything that could be done under the Minsk protocol was done," he said.

At the same time, he said that Russia, in turn, had not complied with anything.

"Russia has not made a single step to de-escalate the conflict. Russia does not want peace. If Putin wanted peace, then the Minsk protocol would be fulfilled in deeds, not just on paper. And that is why Russia is obliged to do what it signed and what it pledged to do before the whole world," Yatseniuk said.
