Minsk agreements are foundation for peace plan implementation in Donbas - Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said peace in Donbas should be achieved on the basis of the Minsk agreements.

"I have no doubts that the Minsk agreements are fundamental to the implementation of the peace plan and they envisage an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons, the immediate release of all hostages, the organization of elections to local councils on the territories that are now occupied and where the anti-terrorist operation is being conducted, the Minsk agreements, which are now recognized by the whole world as fundamental for bringing peace and stability to Ukraine, that the key role in that is played by the OSCE mission," Poroshenko said at the ceremony for handing over armored vehicles to the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission for use in its mission in eastern Ukraine.

He recalled that an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council was held on Wednesday and that the meeting participants clearly said that "the Ukrainian-Russian border, according to independent OSCE observers, is being crossed by Russian regular troops numerous times."

"In recent days, it was clearly stated that the drones used by the OSCE mission had come under fire from militants from the territory not controlled by Ukrainian troops. Thus, an independent and objective statement by the whole world on the situation in eastern Ukraine is extremely important to us," the president said.
