President Poroshenko thanks Obama for supporting Ukraine, peace plan

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has thanked his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama and the U.S. administration for their support of Ukraine and its peace plan, Poroshenko's press service has reported, referring to a recent telephone conversation between the two leaders.

"The two sides voiced their strong confidence that the Minsk agreements, including the September 5 protocol and the September 19 memorandum, should be strictly observed and implemented by all parties. In this context, the presidents of Ukraine and the U.S. paid great attention to the issue of control over the Ukrainian-Russian border and noted that elections in certain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions should be legitimate," it said.

Obama, for his part, reiterated the importance of Ukraine's further reforms, praising the adoption of anti-corruption legislation and a law on the Prosecutor's Office by the country's parliament.

"President Poroshenko thanked the U.S. for its trans-Atlantic solidarity and efforts to secure peace. The two sides also discussed energy issues and reaffirmed the importance of settling the gas issue," the press service said.

Obama told Poroshenko about his recent video conference with the leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy, who, among other topics, discussed ways to restore peace to Ukraine's Donbas region.
