Luhansk has no power, water, phone service for six days - mayor

As of Friday morning, Luhansk is completely disconnected from power, the city does not have water, landline and cell service for six days already, the Luhansk city council press office said in a statement.

"Yesterday gunfire continued on the territory of the regional center, in which 250,000 residents remain. During the armed clashes Luhansk sustained significant damage. The city has over 100 schools, colleges and universities and over 50 pre-school facilities. As of today, 40 education facilities were damaged or destroyed," the press office said.

Most enterprises ceased operations due to non-stop clashes, banks do not work, pensions, salaries and social payments are not paid in the city and fuel supplies were stopped completely.

At that, despite no power, a bread factory continues to bake bread, the city council said. Luhanksmlyn enterprise produces at least 30 tonnes a day to be sold in the city, the statement said.

Luhansk has over 30 healthcare facilities of different levels, including nine major hospitals and medical centers. At that, seven of them were seriously damaged in air strikes and most private clinics were closed.

Only several pharmacies operate in the city and the issue of lack of medication is very acute, the press office said. People with serious chronic diseases who need treatment cannot buy vital medications because drugs are not supplied to Luhansk, the statement said.
