Poroshenko hopes OSCE will persuade militants to cease fire in 20-km radius from Boeing crash site

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has discussed by phone with Dutch and Australian Prime Ministers Mark Rutte and Tony Abbott the situation with the investigation into the crash of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 plane in Donetsk region.

"During the conversations Poroshenko confirmed his strong commitment to interaction in providing access for an expert mission to the crash site, announcing a unilateral ceasefire in a 20-kilometer radius. Moreover, he expects that the OSCE will use its influence on terrorists' ceasing fire in a 20-kilometer radius as well. The Ukrainian president said he was ready to propose that OSCE experts control the situation and monitor the bilateral ceasefire directly at checkpoints," the press service of the head of state reported on Tuesday.

Poroshenko confirmed his determination to ensure an effective transparent international investigation into the circumstances of the plane crash.

"We are making every effort to speed up access of international experts to the crash site," he said.

Poroshenko also said that on his instruction, Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Hroisman had held an urgent meeting with representatives of the Netherlands and Australia, including Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, specialists of the OSCE special monitoring mission, headed by Ertugrul Apakan, Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletei, Deputy Head of Ukraine's Presidential Administration Valeriy Chaly, and representatives of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and SBU.

"The result of the meeting was the creation of a mechanism to coordinate the actions of the Ukrainian side and international experts under the leadership of the Netherlands, with the participation of Australia and other countries, and with the assistance of the OSCE special monitoring mission. A situation room was created for constant coordination of further work and security of the expert group," the press service said.

Poroshenko also recalled that on Thursday, July 31, the Verkhovna Rada should ratify a respective bilateral agreement with Australia to ensure an international investigation and its protection by a civilian police mission.

He expressed hope that these urgent measures would help ensure access to the plane crash site in the shortest period. He also reassured Rutte and Abbott that Ukraine would always abide by all its obligations to international partners and was interested in deepening the coordination of efforts.
