Ukraine starts restoring southern air bases

1 min read

The Ukrainian Air Forces have started restoring three former military airfields in the country's southern region: Martynivka (Voznesensk, Mykolaiv region), Buyalyk and Chervonohlynske (both in Odesa region).

Currently, the runways on the airfields are being covered with Dyckerhoff monolithic concrete, the Ukrainian Military Portal said on Monday.

In the previous years, the airfield in the Mykolaiv region hosted the 642nd Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter aircraft regiment, the Buyalyk - Sukhoi Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft from the 511th reconnaissance aviation regiment, and the Chervonohlynske - the 737th fighter aviation regiment.

A military commandant's office already reopened at the Kanatove air base (Kirovohrad region) in June.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry also contemplated the possibility of restoring air bases in Bolhrad and Lymanske (Odesa region) but discarded the idea due to their closeness to the border, the statement said.
