Poroshenko discusses de-escalation steps with Biden

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko held consultations with U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden by telephone on Saturday, the Ukrainian president's press service reported.

"The talks dealt with intensive coordination between Ukraine and the United States, and with the European partners. Biden assured the Ukrainian president that the United States was prepared to intensify international efforts to forge a peaceful settlement," it said.

Poroshenko in turn thanked the United States, saying that, "trans-Atlantic solidarity is of key importance in further efforts."

"Poroshenko thanked the United States for support and readiness to make further efforts, including in the international arena, in order to guarantee Ukraine's territorial integrity and inviolability of its brothers for the sake of peace and stability," the press service said.

The U.S. vice president conveyed his condolences to the Ukrainian people over combat losses, it said.
