Prospects for Ukraine's joining the European Union (EU) first depend on a political decision of the European Union, according to the leader of the Party of Regions, Viktor Yanukovych.

He said at the sixth YES (Yalta European Strategy) summit on Saturday that there are no signs from the European Union on its readiness to decide on Ukraine's membership in the European Union.

In addition, he said that as for the present form of talks between Ukraine and the European Union, in particular, on the creation of a free trade zone and visa regime, the issues should be settled as soon as possible.

Commenting a new agreement between Ukraine and the European Union being drawn up, the MP said that the document should be filled up with concrete projects.

He also said that Ukraine and the European Union should establish strategic relations.

"First, Ukraine should be a reliable partner to the European Union," he said.
