Ukrainian, Russian ombudspersons creating mission to evacuate civilians from combat zone in eastern Ukraine

The ombudspersons of Ukraine and Russia are creating a joint mission to evacuate civilians from the combat zones in Donetsk and Luhansk regions to safe regions.

"We, the ombudspersons of Ukraine and the Russian Federation, announce the creation of a joint human rights mission to preserve the life, health and safety of civilians caught in the war zone in Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine. The first and most important task is the liberation of forcibly detained persons and the evacuation of civilians to safe zone," reads a statement made in Kharkiv after a meeting of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Commissioner for Human Rights Valeria Lutkovska and her Russian counterpart Ella Pamfilova with the participation of human rights defenders of the two countries.

The authors of the document called on all parties of the conflict "to the immediate and unconditional release of illegally detained citizens not involved in armed confrontation."
