Poroshenko unlikely to visit east Ukraine soon - governor

1 min read

Petro Poroshenko, who was sworn in as president of Ukraine on Saturday, is unlikely to visit the Donets Basin (Donbas), the conflict-engulfed large industrial area in the east of the country, any time soon because it would be "difficult" to guarantee him security there, said the governor of Donetsk region.

"I don't know when Poroshenko will come to Donbas. But definitely not next week or in two weeks. To be able to come here Poroshenko needs security guarantees. At the moment this is difficult to do. The [Russian] border should be closed first," Serhiy Taruta told Ukrainian website OstroV.

In his inaugural speech, Poroshenko said he planned to visit Donbas shortly.
