Neighbors must respect any sovereign choice of Ukraine – Van Rompuy

1 min read

All of Ukraine's neighbors will benefit from the country's return to the path of stability and prosperity, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has said.

"All neighbors stand to benefit from a return to stability in Ukraine and the promotion of growth and development," Van Rompuy said in a statement on Saturday.

He said that "all neighbors also need to respect its sovereign choices, including stronger ties with the European Union, and its territorial integrity."

Van Rompuy also said that "the European Union will be at Ukraine's side and remains ready to work with those that share these objectives of democracy, prosperity and stability."

He expressed hope that President Petro Poroshenko "has received a strong mandate to advance in the path of reforms and turn Ukraine into the modern and democratic country its citizens call for."

"A united and decentralized country where all will find their place and different identities and minorities will be acknowledged and respected," Van Rompuy said.

Poroshenko was sworn in as Ukrainian president in Kyiv on Saturday.
