Parliament to consider possibility of all-Ukrainian referendum on April 29 – justice minister

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukraine's parliament) is planning on April 29 to consider the issue of holding a national referendum, Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko has said.

He said this when asked whether the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine today considered the issue of holding such a referendum.

According to him, "the government will provide additional information."

The topic of the referendum hasn't been informed so far.

As reported on Monday, the National Security and Defense Council during its sitting approved a decision to hold the nationwide referendum regarding the political system of Ukraine. According to president of Open Policy Analytical Center Ihor Zhdanov, the referendum was proposed to be conducted on June 15, however, this decision has to be approved by the parliament.

Previously, Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov expressed support for proposals for a national referendum on reforms that would turn Ukraine into a federal state. He said the proposed plebiscite could be held simultaneously with a planned presidential election on May 25.

The council of representatives of territorial hromadas (communities), political parties and public organizations of the so-called "Donetsk People's Republic" has approved the wording of the question for a referendum on May 11, 2014. The question proposed for discussion is: "Do you support the act on state independence of the Donetsk People's Republic?"

The people who have taken over the building of the Ukrainian Security Service's department in Luhansk region have announced the creation of the Luhansk People's Republic and decided to conduct the regional-wide referendum putting for a vote a question :"Do you uphold the act on proclamation of the state independence of 'Luhansk People's Republic?'"
