Poroshenko: Dialogue must be maintained with eastern regions

1 min read

Ukraine's presidential candidate and independent parliamentary deputy Petro Poroshenko said dialogue should be launched with people living in eastern Ukraine.

"I would not underestimate the level of tensions and the depth of fear and danger they feel. We must give an assignment to our politicians and finally establish direct dialogue, and provide guarantees to the population of eastern Ukraine that nothing threatens them," Poroshenko told reporters in Kyiv on Monday after talks with a British parliamentary delegation.

He said residents of the eastern regions will retain the right to speak the language they prefer. Local councils should decide which language should be spoken, how money should be spent and what monuments should be set up, he said.

"At the same time, the state must guarantee security on the streets. We must restore order in our territory. No one else will do this for us. Concerning the rest, we can fully rely on our partners. Let us demonstrate resolve in maintaining Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Poroshenko said.
