Turchynov rejects idea of Ukraine's federalization
The new Ukrainian authorities are considering giving broader powers to the regions, Ukraine's Acting President and Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov said.
The systemic crisis inherited by the new Ukrainian authorities requires decisive action, Turchynov said at a Friday meeting with OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, according to the acting president's press office. "This is exactly why we are holding a dialogue with the all regions of our country and are considering broadening regional powers," Turchynov said.
Conditions will be created for broadening the regions' economic independence and strengthening the rights of local governments, he said.
"But we are not talking about Ukraine's federalization that Russia has been trying to inspire through its agents of influence," Turchynov said, adding that Kyiv favors strong regions within a unitary state.
