Verkhovna Rada obliges Interior Ministry, Security Service to immediately disarm illegal armed groups

Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada has passed a resolution on immediate disarmament of illegal armed groups in the country.

A total of 256 deputies voted for this resolution authored by leader of the Batkivschyna faction Serhiy Sobolev at a meeting on Tuesday.

According to the explanatory note, it is proposed that the Ukrainian Interior Ministry and Security Service be obliged to carry out the immediate disarmament of illegal armed formations.

The necessity of passing this draft resolution is caused by "the escalation of criminal situations and numerous incidents of unsanctioned use of arms, which led to death and injuries of people" and "constant provocations from foreign citizens in southeastern Ukraine and Kyiv," the document said.

The draft resolution was registered on the Verkhovna Rada Web site on April 1.

Meanwhile, a month of volunteer arms surrender was held in Ukraine in March. On March 31 the Ukrainian Interior Ministry declared another month of volunteer surrender of arms, ammunition, explosives and special means - during April 1-30.
