Ukrainian parliamentary commission to probe Sashko Bily's death

The Ukrainian parliament has created a provisional investigations commission to investigate the circumstances of the death of Right Sector coordinator Oleksandr Muzychko (nicknamed Sashko Bily).

A total of 232 of 279 parliamentarians voted for that decision on Friday.

The commission will be led by independent parliamentarian Yuriy Derevianko. The commission will be comprised of representatives of all factions and three representatives of public organizations.

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov said before the vote on the creation of the commission: "The Verkhovna Rada should ensure the clear and transparent verification of the circumstances surrounding the death of this man."

Muzychko (Sashko Bily) died in the early hours of March 25. Ukraine's First Deputy Interior Minister Volodymyr Yevdokymov said initially that Muzychko was fatally wounded during his arrest, because he opened fire at the police. Yevdokymov said later that the fatal heart injury was caused by Muzychko's own weapon.

The Right Sector demanded the immediate resignation of Interior Minister Arsen Avakov and the arrest of all officers from the Sokil (Falcon) special police force who played a part in Muzychko's death. Avakov said he was threatened by the Right Sector but "accepts the challenge" and his position towards those violating public order will be fairly tough.

Late on March 27, Right Sector activists conducted a warning picket outside the building of the Ukrainian parliament, demanding Avakov's resignation. The rally continued early on Friday.

Avakov announced that within the next few days the Interior Ministry would publish audio files that may shed light on the attempt to detain Muzychko, and his subsequent death.
