A fire that broke out at a tank brigade in Kryvy Rih, Dnipropetrovsk region, has damaged five tanks, the press and information department of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported on Friday.

According to the ministry, a T-64BV caught fire at around 1730 on March 20 in the storage facility for combat vehicles of the 17th separate tank brigade stationed in Kryvy Rih.

"According to preliminary reports, the cause of the fire was a short circuit in the R-123 radio station when checking communications between two T-64BV tanks that were in the storage facility. The wiring on one of the combat vehicles, when turning on the power, caught fire due to its physical deterioration," reads the statement.

Measures taken by the tank crew to extinguish the fire were ineffective, and the fire spread to a second T-64BV tank located nearby.

"The fire was contained as of the morning on March 21, and nobody was killed or injured. There is no threat to the lives of local residents. Apart from the two military vehicles on which the fire broke out, three more T-64BV tanks were damaged," reads the report.
