Ukrainian parliament urges world not to recognize annexation of Crimea by Russia

The Ukrainian parliament has asked all members of the international community to refrain from recognizing the self-declared "Republic of Crimea" and the annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol by Russia, according to the declaration on the struggle for the liberation of Ukraine.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that a total of 274 MPs on Thursday voted for the declaration on the liberation of Ukraine, which was submitted by Verkhovna Rada Chairman and acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov.

"The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine asks all members of the international community to refrain from granting international recognition to the so-called 'Republic of Crimea' and the annexation of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol to Russia as new subjects of the Russian Federation," reads the declaration.

The document notes that the Verkhovna Rada draws the attention of foreign governments and parliaments, international organizations and the international community to the fact that the Ukrainian people will never recognize the annexation of an integral part of its territory seized by Russia "in gross violation of fundamental norms of international law and the generally recognized principles of the coexistence of nations."

On behalf of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine the declaration notes that Crimea was and will be part of Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian people will never, under any circumstances, stop their struggle for the liberation of Crimea from invaders, no matter how hard and long it is," reads the declaration.
