Ukrainians to have to show passport when buying SIM-cards

Ukrainians will soon have to show their passports and sign a special agreement with a mobile operator when buying a SIM-card, according to amendments into the law on telecommunications approved by the Verkhovna Rada, the country's parliament, on Thursday.

In particular, the document introduced the notion of a telecommunications identification card (SIM, USIM cards). Telecommunication services for the holders of such cards are rendered on the basis of an agreement signed between mobile operator and consumer according to the legal procedure.

The law comes into force from the day it was posted.

State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine initiated the adoption of such law in September 2012, under the government's order in the interests of the work of law enforcement agencies.

Interfax-Ukraine is waiting for comments from Ukraine's mobile operators.
