The Central Election Commission (CEC) has asked the Constitutional Court to explain whether citizens with a criminal record can run for Ukrainian president, the commission's press service has reported.

The commission approved the text of an appeal to the Constitutional Court on this subject at a meeting on Thursday.

In its motion the CEC asked the Constitutional Court to give an official interpretation of the provisions of Paragraph 20, Part 1, Article 92, Parts 2 and 6 of Article 103 of the Constitution of Ukraine and Part 4 of Article 9 of the law of Ukraine on the election of the Ukrainian president in terms of the question whether a Ukrainian citizen who was convicted for committing an intentional crime can be nominated and registered as a candidate for the post of president and be elected president if this criminal record was not canceled or withdrawn in accordance with the law.

CEC member Oleksandr Shelestov will represent the commission during the consideration of a constitutional motion at the Constitutional Court.
