Russia releases Ukrainian fisherman Fedorovych, says Foreign Ministry

Ukrainian fisherman Oleksandr Fedorovych has been released in Russia, Interfax-Ukraine learned in the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Ukraine.

"He has been released thanks to the efforts of the Ukrainian side and he is heading home," director of the information policy department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Yevhen Perebyinis said on Wednesday morning.

He promised to disclose all the details later.

As reported, a Ukrainian fishing vessel and a Russian patrol boat collided in the Sea of Azov off the coast of the Russian village of Vorontsovka on July 17. The fishing boat capsized and, as a result, four Ukrainians died and one survived.

The Ukrainian survivor, Oleksandr Fedorovych, underwent surgery on July 19 in a hospital in Yeysk, in Russia's Krasnodar territory.

A criminal case against the surviving fisherman is being investigated in Russia. The Russian law enforcement authorities charged the Ukrainian of illegal fishing and imposed travel restrictions on him. Fedorovych is facing up to two years in prison.

Ukraine has insisted on Fedorovych's return to Ukraine, saying all investigative actions should be conducted on the territory of Ukraine.
