Korolevska: Unemployment in Ukraine comes to 7.5% in H1

Social Policy Minister of Ukraine Natalia Korolevska has noted that the labor market in Ukraine demonstrates stability despite the global economic crisis.

"Amid the global economic crisis, the labor market in Ukraine demonstrates stability. There are also some positive trends. The unemployment rate under the International Labor Organization methodology has reduced. While in the first half of 2012 it amounted to 7.8%, by the end of the first half of 2013 it came to 7.5%," Korolevska said during a meeting on employment in Kyiv on Friday.

She also noted that the unemployment rate in Ukraine is still lower than in many countries of the European Union, where the average rate is 11%.

According to the minister, to date, all of the tools of the law on employment concerning the employment of people are being implemented in full. In the first nine months of 2013, the State Employment Service found jobs for 113,200 unemployed, which is twice as much as over the relevant period last year, Korolevska said.

She also said that a mechanism of compensation of a single social contribution to employers started working in June of this year. Employers may receive compensation for employment of people, who are not in high demand on labor market, for creating jobs with a salary of more than three minimum ones and for creating jobs in the priority sectors of the economy, she said.

Korolevska noted that the number of people, who took use of the opportunity to start their own business using the funds of a one-time annual assistance to the unemployed, was growing. In particular, according to the minister, in January-September 2013, 11,600 people took advantage of this right, which is by 2,900 more than over the same period of 2012.

In addition, Korolevska said that the level of employment of people who had undergone training was growing. "In January - September 2013, 180,500 unemployed underwent training after having been sent there by employment centers, the minister said.
